On May 1, the Great American Horse Drive made its way through Maybell, CO. It was an entertaining spectacle as nearly 500 horses were driven from one ranch to another in Moffat County. Each year, Sombrero Ranches hosts the 2 day drive over 62 miles of ranch country terrain. People from around the world saddle up to drive horses from a ranch near Browns Park to their summer pasture about 12 miles west of Craig.
This year participants from Holland, Belgium, Germany and many other foreign countries traveled to Moffat County to help drive the horses from one ranch to the other. About 50 people helped with the extravaganza, and those who make the entire trip get a Gate to Gate buckle when they complete the drive. About 95 percent of the participants get the buckle.
Participants pay nearly $2,500 to Sombrero Ranches for the wild west experience. The drive started in 1962 and gains popularity each year. It takes 2 days to make the entire drive. It is the experience of a lifetime.
